Biking to Bunker Hill while Waiting for a Wedding
Last night, there was a pre-wedding reception for one of my best friends from college, at a bar in Harvard Square. I had ridden up from New York City yesterday afternoon, and am staying with a cousin in Somerville, whose apartment has an excellent view of downtown Boston.Since I have most of the day free, I wanted to do something educational today before the wedding. Instead of spending $25 at the Museum of Fine Arts or the Museum of Science, I decided to ride a bit of Boston's Freedom Trail.
I got a little lost in Charlestown, MA, but eventually wound up at the Bunker Hill Monument.
Two-hundred ninety-four steps later, lugging my helmet and weighted down with full motorcycle gear, I arrived at the pinnacle of the obelisk.
Huffing and puffing, I was happy to get some exercise, and the pinnace offered full view of downtown Boston and the Leonard P. Zakim / Bunker Hill Bridge to the East.
The Mystic River joins the Charles River in Boston Harbor to the South.
There was a fellow with a musket demonstration and a history lesson when I came down, discussing period dress and the American Revolutionary Army.
I rode around Charlestown a bit, then got lost in Everitt, finally returning to Cambridge to get cleaned up for the wedding.
